Abseiling UndergroundThe Sport

Caving is a fast growing sport. It started back in the 1800's, when a few adventurous people began to venture underground with rope ladders and bicycle lamps. Nowadays, several thousand people follow in their footsteps using purpose made equipment drawn by the thrill and excitement of exploring a different world.

There are four main areas in the country where you can do Caving: The Yorkshire Dales; The Derbyshire Peak District; The Brecon Beacons in South Wales; and The Mendip Hills in Somerset. Between these areas Britain can boast a wide range of wet and dry caves, long vertical pitches, tight squeezes and beautiful formations.

The Team

The Team has been around since the early 1960's and membership is open to anyone with an interest in caving who is willing to actively support the team. The function of the team is to provide a high standard of SAFE caving for members of the Scout Movement in and around Essex.

The Instructors in the team have a wide experience of caving both at home and abroad. Their skills include Diving, Photography, Surveying, Geology, and many other aspects of the sport.

Why not keep in touch with what is going on in the team, or build up your experience to gain a 'Form Cave', by coming along to our meetings on the first Wednesday of March, May, July, September & November, 8.30pm at Meadgate Scout Hut, Meadgate Avenue, Chelmsford.
